아티스트들의 각기 다른 예술적 특성을 지닌 작품들을 보다 널리 알리고자 기획되었습니다.

<Kaleidoscope;파편>은 조각조각 흩어진 다양한 한인 유학생 아티스트들이 이 전시를 통해 한데 모여, 마치 만화경처럼 다채롭고 아름다운 예술적
풍경을 함께 만들어 나간다는 의미를 담고 있습니다.

The 2025 Exhibition by CalArts UKAL, , will be held from 04.18 to 04.20. This exhibition was organized to showcase the works of Korean international student artists studying at CalArts, each with their unique artistic characteristics.

Symbolizes how diverse Korean international student artists, each like scattered fragments, come together through this exhibition to create a vibrant and beautiful artistic landscape—just like a kaleidoscope.

Biophilia is a compound word derived from "bio", meaning life, and "philia", meaning love. It refers to the innate human tendency to feel a deep affection and connection to nature. The term is based on the premise that the relationship between humans and nature is essential and inescapable for human survival, underscoring nature’s irreplaceable role in human society.

This sculpture is an offshoot or a ‘fragment’ of the artist’s previous mid-residency exhibition, , and metaphorically reflects the paradox of those who claim to love nature while simultaneously living in ways that harm it. At first glance, the work evokes the forms and colors of grass, trees, and flowers. Yet upon closer inspection, viewers realize that none of the elements are real natural materials—they are all artificially fabricated.

Confronted with this piece, viewers are invited to question the nature of their admiration for the beauty of nature: Is it a genuine appreciation of nature’s intrinsic and ephemeral beauty, or merely a fascination with an artificial, never-wilting shell constructed by human hands?

바이오필리아 | Biophilia는 ‘생명’을 뜻하는 “bio(바이오)”와 ‘사랑’을 의미하는 “philia(필리아)”의 합성어로, 인간이 본능적으로 지닌 자연에 대한 애착과 사랑을 의미한다. 이는 인간의 생존에 있어 자연과의 관계가 필수 불가결하다는 전제 아래 만들어진 개념으로, 인간 사회에 있어 자연이 얼마나 불가피하고 핵심적인 존재인지를 드러낸다.이 작품은 작년 작가의 mid-res 전시였던 의 ‘파편’처럼 파생된 조형물로, 자연을 사랑한다고 말하면서도 동시에 누구보다 자연을 파괴하는 삶을 살아가는 인간의 모순된 모습을 은유적으로 표현하고 있다.

작품 속 자연의 형상은 풀, 나무, 꽃의 색과 형태를 띠고 있지만, 가까이서 들여다보면 그 어떤 것도 실제 자연물이 아닌 인공적인 재료로 만들어졌음을 알 수 있다.관객은 이 조형물을 마주하며 자연의 아름다움을 숭배하는 자신을 돌아보게 되고, 그것이 과연 자연 본연의 진실된 아름다움인지, 혹은 인간이 영원히 시들지 않도록 ‘만들어낸’ 껍데기뿐인 아름다움인지에 대해 질문하게 된다.
