아티스트들의 각기 다른 예술적 특성을 지닌 작품들을 보다 널리 알리고자 기획되었습니다.

<Kaleidoscope;파편>은 조각조각 흩어진 다양한 한인 유학생 아티스트들이 이 전시를 통해 한데 모여, 마치 만화경처럼 다채롭고 아름다운 예술적
풍경을 함께 만들어 나간다는 의미를 담고 있습니다.

The 2025 Exhibition by CalArts UKAL, , will be held from 04.18 to 04.20. This exhibition was organized to showcase the works of Korean international student artists studying at CalArts, each with their unique artistic characteristics.

Symbolizes how diverse Korean international student artists, each like scattered fragments, come together through this exhibition to create a vibrant and beautiful artistic landscape—just like a kaleidoscope.

숨결 (Breath), 가시 (Thorn)

Breath originates from the artist’s introspective contemplation on the nature of creation. Inspired by the parallel between the identity of an artist and the image of a divine Creator, the work seeks to visualize the primordial moment of genesis.

The piece portrays a process in which light and color emerge gradually from darkness, evoking the symbolic narrative of “light spoken into being, colors born from light, and life formed through those colors.” This unfolding is a metaphor for the creative act itself—just as the Creator breathes life into existence, the artist breathes essence into the void through art.

Thorn is a work that explores the profound themes of pain, love, and redemption. Contrary to the often idealized and serene depictions of Jesus in traditional art history, this piece focuses on the visceral agony and cries of a man enduring suffering nailed to a cross.

The artist draws inspiration from the description in the Book of Isaiah—“He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him”—emphasizing the raw, unadorned image of Christ in his moment of crucifixion. Confronted with the question, What kind of love endures excruciating pain for someone unknown?, the artist interprets such love as one that transcends dimensions—something beyond human comprehension.

’숨결‘은 창조의 본질에 대한 작가의 내면적 사유에서 출발한 작업이다. 작가는 예술가로서의 정체성과 창조주로서의 신의 이미지 사이에서 영감을 얻으며, 창조 행위의 근원적 순간을 시각적으로 재현하고자 했다.

작품은 태초의 장면을 연상시키는 흑암 속에서 빛과 색이 점차 생성되는 과정을 통해, “말씀으로 빛을 지으시고, 빛으로부터 색과 생명이 탄생했다”는 상징적 내러티브를 담아낸다. 이는 마치 신이 생명에 숨결을 불어넣듯, 예술가 역시 무(無)로부터 새로운 존재를 창조해내는 과정을 은유적으로 표현한 것이다.
’가시‘는 고통과 사랑, 그리고 구속(救贖)의 의미에 대해 탐구하는 작품이다. 전통적 회화와 조각에서 반복적으로 재현되어온 성스러운 이미지의 예수와는 달리, 이 작품은 실질적인 고통과 절규의 순간에 집중한다.

작가는 이사야서의 묘사처럼 “고운 모양도, 풍채도 없이” 십자가에 달린 예수의 처절한 형상을 마주하며, “누군가를 위해 감내한 찢어지는 고통”이라는 주제에 깊이 천착한다. 그 사랑은 단순한 인간적 감정을 초월한, 차원을 넘는 본질적 사랑이라는 메시지를 시각적으로 담아내고자 했다.
